Media Language Analysis

Horror films use established signs and codes in their conventions to signify deeper meaning, in my A2 horror trailer we used red colors in less obvious places for example on the nails, this connotes danger and blood as red is a warning color.

Theorist Roland Barthes talks about semiotic, which is the study of signs, or the social production of meaning by sign systems, of how things come to have significance by meaning. He mentions two identifies orders of signification. This is denotation and connotation, one talks about the actual object and the other talks about the hidden meaning behind the object. In my summer trailer we used the typical teen characters such as the slut, the jock, the nerd and the final girl, we decided to use these particular characters to represent teen punishment as a sub-genre , this was purposely used as red is a danger color. One common denotation in horror movies is dark settings, this is used because it connotes fear and danger as many peoples fear is the dark. Symbolic codes are the things we pick up on in horror films such as the careless teenager who often gets killed first, also the antagonist who is often a monster, ghost, zombie, mutated freak or serial killer, we recognize these things in horror films because they are the things we fear.

The next thing I will be discussing is technical codes used within the camera, the main camera techniques used are pan, tracking, tilt, handheld and zoom. When creating a horror movie all of these techniques come in handy as there are special ways in which they are used, for example, Laura Mulvey came up with the theory of male gaze, this is used in many horror films as females are used for male pleasure rather than actually being needed for the film, for this type of purpose, camera techniques such as zoom and tilt are mainly used to either show us the body of the girl or to zoom in to specific features. In my summer trailer we used techniques such as panning to set the scene and show an establishing shot of where the scene will take place.

The next thing I will talk about is technical codes within editing, the main two codes we need to use are jump cuts, cuts to black and fade to black. These techniques are mainly used for horror films and are identifiable when it comes to trailers as there are a lot of them incorporated in the trailer, in my summer trailer I mainly used cut to blacks to build up tension and to set the scene of horror. Sound also plays a big part in creating a trailer as sound has a lot of meaning in what is about to happen next, loud sounds are mainly used in horror movies for example, glass dropping, babies crying or people screaming, in my summer trailer trailer I planned on using objects dropping as it grabs the audiences attention and creates a sense of fear and worry.
