Representation essay

The theory of Male Gaze was created by Laura Mulvey, this theory is that the camera will be positioned in a way that we are able to view the women's body parts for example her curves leaving us being able to see from a mans perspective. The male gaze leads to hegemonic ideologies within our society. Mulvey states that women are used for 2 functions in most films, as an erotic object for the characters within the narrative to view or as an erotic object for the spectators in the cinema to view. I don't believe that this theory really relates to my trailer however it could have some relevance, the as the monster watches his victims and we see the girls from his perspective. The strengths of this theory is that it does have a lot of relevance to today's society and males view on women as more of a sexual object than a human, it also creates awareness towards today's problems. The weakness' of this theory is that you cant put it into action for every film. Some horror films that contain male gaze are Saw, The purge, Carrie and nightmare on elm street which is what I based my film on.

The next theory I will look at is The final girl, this is the theory that the final girl is that last character (female) left alive to confront the killer in a slasher movie, this character is very conventional and follows certain characteristics. This theory relates a lot to my trailer as i had a final girl who was left to confront the killer, I like this idea as I believe it goes against the typical idea of a man being the hero. The strengths of this theory is that it has now become very popular in horror movies as women enjoy the thought of knowing that the women can be the hero.

Religion and sexuality is the next theory, this is the idea that religion plays a big part in many horror films as the monster believes that he is doing good to serve his/her religion by removing impurities from the film such as certain characters, this relates to my horror film as one of my characters is a slut and this makes her the first character to be killed because she is impure, making her the first target, my purest character lives until the end making her the final girl.

The teen punishment theory is the idea that teenagers are bad in society and therefore deserve to be punished for the wrong they do, there are different characters within this theory such as, the jock, the slut, the nerd, the final girl e.g. My trailer contains a few of these characters however my group is all girls so there is no jock. I believe that this theory also relates a lot to today's society as teenagers are seen as a problem.
